Napkins. Aprons. Placemats. Kitchen Towels. Made by our first refugee sewing class, these lovely home goods provide a way for you to invest in future opportunities for sewing class students!
During the holidays, we all want to give to those less fortunate. While there are numerous causes and excellent charities to invest in, we'd like to suggest yet another option: buying stuff.
You see, in the short-term, charitable giving is important. It helps provide needed relief to those in desperate circumstances and meets emergency needs. It also allows communities to provide necessary services and care for those who are most vulnerable. All of this is good and right and we encourage you to support your favorite charities over the holidays.
But if you want to add to your giving portfolio, buying stuff is another very good option. When you purchase items through work-based initiatives and social enterprises, you're supporting skills training and sustainable job creation, both of which provide the only real way out of poverty. We'll be putting together a "Buy stuff, do good" gift guide in the next few weeks, highlighting some of the awesome social enterprises you can buy from!
Until then, we're doing a special blog readers' sale, providing double impact for each item you buy via this page. Here's what will happen when you buy these fairtrade napkins, upcycled placemats and fun aprons:
- 20% of each purchase will be invested in Make Welcome Refugee Sewing School, providing job skills training for refugee women enrolled in the program.
- The rest will go to paying fair trade wages to the refugee artisans we already work with, as well as funding future employment opportunities!
The napkins are approximately 17" X 17" - large napkin size - and feature two complementary but unique sides so you can mix and match as needed! They are cotton napkins and can be washed in cold water and dried on low.
